These ongoing, “living” memorials can be especially meaningful for service members processing their experiences and remembering those they lost, and physically represent the emotional weight they carry every day.

As the nation celebrates our 17 million living veterans, it is also important to know that the number of these heroes who are ending their own lives prematurely is rising.

By Armistice Day, Nov. 11, 1918, Jews, Mormons and Christian Scientists had joined the ranks of the chaplain corps. As I write in my book, “Enlisting Faith: How the Military Chaplaincy Shaped Religion and State in Modern America,” this significant change inaugurated a century-long project to redefine what counted as American religion.

I tread tenderly honoring each soldier’s beauty and strength and story,

To every veteran and their loved ones I say thank you.

This is truly a day to honor people, veterans, for serving and sacrificing in defense of what they believed in.

What started out as Armistice Day, the 11 hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the end of World War I, the Great War, has become Veterans Day.
