Ramadan begins today for those of us in America, and we will observe our first sawm (fast). Muslims around the world will be seeking spiritual merit or reward by fasting, praying, doing good deeds and asking for repentance.
I have observed that, although we are trying to be the champions of equality, diversity and justice, we are doing the opposite. We think we are getting justice, but we are also increasing conflicts and hatred more than ever before. So we start another cycle of inequality and injustice. We must all work together towards justice and not let our emotions, our personal choices and our political agendas come between us but, instead, we must follow social ethics and respect human dignity.
Because of the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, in combination with the over-the-top rhetoric of Donald Trump and other GOP candidates in the presidential primary campaign, Muslims in the United States have been having a pretty rough time of it lately.
