Islamophobia, in other words, does not operate in a vacuum. It creates repercussions far beyond the Muslim community. It’s time our leaders took action. 

The Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service gave Washington State University students an opportunity Thursday (Feb. 1) to learn from two scholars on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in an open dialogue rather than a debate.

A group of local residents frustrated and horrified at what has been going on in Israel and the Gaza Strip over the last two months have banded together to create a new organization, the Inland Northwest Coalition for the Liberation of Palestine.

Directly targeting civilians or exposing them to disproportionate harm in war is wrong for the same reasons that it is wrong to kill or harm innocent people in peacetime. People who pose no threat to others deserve respect and protection from violence regardless of their nationality or group identity. To violate that respect in war is not only a war crime but a moral crime.

Why do we see that the deaths of Ukrainians are more painful, more felt, than the deaths of Palestinians? We should feel for both as both are equally human beings made of flesh and blood.

The Inland Northwest Coalition for the Liberation of Palestine (INWCLP) will hold a peaceful protest calling for a cease-fire on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. in Riverfront Park.
