For years I have had to deal with people who are members of the “Wannabe” tribe – they want to claim they are part Native.

I learned the importance of separating gender identity or expression from sexual orientation: that is, how one feels one’s gender is distinct from to whom one is attracted. Put another way, my studies and my teaching have helped me to see the many strands that constitute one’s gendered and sexual self.

The compartmentalization of social identities works well for many and not so well for many others. Since infinite diversity exists in all groupings why not just eliminate social labeling?
