Scott Thumma, who co-authored “Recent Shifts in America’s Largest Protestant Churches: Megachurches 2015 Report,”a study released this week highlighting changes in U.S. megachurches, will be the guest panelist for Saturday’s Coffee Talk.

Thumma is a sociologist and director of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. He conducted the study with Warren Bird, director of research for Leadership Network.

The report found that although megachurch participation continues to boom, regular, individual attendance is down and there is a decrease in participation from younger generations. Participation by millennials has plateaued at about 19 percent since 2010 and Gen-X attendees are leaving, with participationg down from 28 percent in 2010 to 23 percent.

megachurch1 megachurch2The study also showed that multi-site megachurches are becoming more popular. Today 62 percent of megachurchese have multiple locations, up from 42 percent in 2010. Additionally, 30 percent of these churches now offer an online campus, which includes interactive features, staff involvement and online attender accountability.

Thumma is the first ever digital Coffee Talk panelist. He will discuss his findings further at Satuday’s Coffee Talk, “The Changing Religious Landscape,” which will be at 10 a.m. at Indaba Coffee, 1425 W Broadway.
