“Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church” is a love story from beginning to end. Written by Megan Phelps-Roper—who is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps, the infamous and now deceased founder of the church—the book is a surprisingly loving tale about a formidable family, whose practice of free speech is at once inspiring and yet very harmful to not only those outside the church, but to the members inside as well.

WASHINGTON (RNS) The image of Christianity that Fred Phelps painted was a hateful, judgmental collection of rabble-rousers -- an image that, paradoxically, did more to help his targets than it advanced his message.

(RNS) While some post anti-Phelps comments on Facebook, at least one blogger is urging the LGBT community to be more charitable and "show love to the most unlovable person."

Westboro Baptist Church announced today that they will be in Spokane on Friday to protest the memorial for former House Speaker Tom Foley.

While the nation mourns the loss of life in Monday's horrific bombings in Boston, the Westboro Baptist Church is celebrating in its usual fashion, saying the explosions were sent by God as punishment for gay marriage.

“Thank God for the Boston marathon bombs,” the church said on Twitter, the Washington Times reported.

I’ll admit I occasionally look at Twitter while I am at work.  And sometimes (just sometimes), I like to click links and read articles or see the photos of the “top 10 best and worst” of (fill in the blank).  While this is clearly not the best use of my time, I never let it get in the way of what I need to get done on any given day.

Today, I happened to click on a link for the “World’s Most Pointless Protest Signs.”
