This Sunday is the Feast of St. Francis. Famous for preaching to the birds and blessings all living things, Francis is often celebrated in congregations with a Blessing of the Animals rite.
On Monday Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Prep came together to publicly sign the St. Francis Pledge to Care, which Brian G. Henning, co-chair of Gonzaga’s Advisory Council on Stewardship and Sustainability, said reflects the institutions Jesuit mission to care for the planet and those living in poverty.
LOS ANGELES (RNS) Many of today’s evangelical Christians seem to be taking to heart the words traditionally attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” Or at least they were at the recent Q Conference here, a gathering of more than a few of the most influential and innovative mover-shakers of the evangelical world.
(RNS) Just as many Catholics have connected Pope Francis’ humility and austere lifestyle with that of St. Francis of Assisi, those seeking clues on the new pontiff’s approach to Christian-Muslim relations see another example in the iconic namesake.
In honor of St. Francis of Assissi, the patron saint of animals and the environment, churches across the country will bless dogs, cats, turtles, birds, horses and other critters in his honor next month.
St. Francis Day is Oct. 4 this year and The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will have a Blessing of thet Pets on Oct. 7 at its 10:30 a.m. service.
