When it comes to the hot and hostile topic of racism, how can I talk so another person will listen? Maybe more importantly, how can I listen so another person will talk?

There needs to be a New Normal in race relations.

The world as we know it has in many ways stayed the same when it comes to the virus of racism.

What’s critical to understand is that this kind of racism – what we might call explicit racism – doesn’t exist on its own.

We talk about the white supremacy that was evident in Charlottesville. White supremacy is real. It's not just a few angry white guys, it's the systemic racism embedded in our country. There are more whites than people of color in seats of authority and power, even in regional areas where whites are the minority. That is just flat wrong! We cannot continue to speak over our black and brown siblings in Christ.

“The Blood of Emmett Till” offers a chilling reminder of the ugly toll of racism, which still infects American culture long after the Civil War. 

“For the last 25 years, I have spent most of my time researching and documenting the most vile forms of racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, Islamophobia, nativism and other forms of bigotry you could possibly imagine,” Burghart said.
