In my opinion, chaplains exist to disciple and promote faith of some sort, usually in a deity.

Atheists, at least broadly, reject belief in deities

This is a more complicated question that it seems at first. If the question were, "Should the military provide chaplains for atheists?" the answer would be, "Of course, they have a constitutional and statutory duty to provide chaplains for all belief systems."

The animated figure on the computer screen moves carefully among the wounded, darting from one fallen figure to another. Trailing the combat medics, the uniformed military chaplain kneels and performs “spiritual triage,” assessing who is dead, who is soon to die, and who is likely to survive.
