A Letter To Our Son on His Bar Mitzvah

Our son was called to the Torah for his bar mitzvah ceremony just weeks after the shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburg. In the wake of that horror, we had to step back and decide what we did and didn’t want to do for his ceremony. We opted to continue as planned, although with a guard at the door. Rabbi Elizabeth Goldstein, an associate professor in religious studies at Gonzaga University, and the Jewish Bulldogs hosted a Passover Seder Wednesday night at the Globe room in Cataldo Hall where attendees not only received a meal, but also a lesson on it, its traditions and what each food and practice symbolized as people engaged in discussion and song.

If a child’s mother is Jewish, the vast majority of Jewish communities will accept that child as Jewish. If a child’s father is Jewish but the mother is not, then Reform and Reconstructionist congregations, and other Jewish progressive communities (Renewal, Humanistic, etc.), will accept the child as Jewish if he or she is being raised Jewish.
