Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Spokane are busy gearing up for festivities Dec. 15 as they plan final rehearsals for The Music of Christmas, an hour-long production involving a 50-person local choir, six songs, five instrumental accompaniments and a pianist.
Director Karen Hawkins has been so busy this week, she’s barely had time to sit down, but she’s excited for the final performance this weekend, and has high hopes for attendance.
“I’m hoping for about 500,” she said.
Part of the draw, she hopes, will be the professional musicians the group has performing with them. Players on oboe, cello, horn, violin and flute will augment the choral sections of the piece, which isn’t a traditional Christmas play.
“The narrative is individual stories and Scripture that connects the songs,” she said.
Most of the players have current or past stints in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene symphonies, and the horn and oboe players accompany theater productions at the Spokane Civic Theater.
