On Saturday at 7:30pm, the Cathedral Choir of St John the Evangelist, Cathedral Kantorei Choir, the Cathedral Collegium Orchestra and organist, John Bodinger under the direction of Tim Westerhaus will present Bach’s Easter Oratorio, “Kommt eilet und laufet” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Five Mystical Songs.”
The familiar Bach “Easter Oratorio” dramatizes the responses of four disciples to Jesus’ resurrection and will be sung by soloists Andrea Olsen, soprano; Amanda Rood, mezzo soprano; Eric Betz, tenor; and Joshua Vander Plaats, bass, joined by the full choir for the final “Preis und Dank,” according to a press release.
In 1911, using the poetry of George Herbert to create this very English, series of meditations, Vaughan Williams created the “Five Mystical Songs.”
“I think this is such wonderful timing,” Westerhaus said in a press release. “We have just spent the month of April focusing on the art of poetry, and here we have Vaughan Williams’ elegant music enfolding Herbert’s poetry in ways that are so intimate and poignant as well as soul-stirringly triumphant. What better way to celebrate Eastertide at the Cathedral.”
While the concert is free, donations are accepted.
