Stacks of Sauconys and Brooks covered in roses obscured the bronze feet of Riverfront Park's Bloomsday sculptures Tuesday evening as approximately 40 runners from two Spokane running clubs gathered to remember victims of the Boston Marathon bomb attacks. Attendees brought new and lightly used running shoes to donate in memory of fallen and injured marathoners.
Cassie Lillard, an event organizer, put on the event with members of the Flying Irish, Runners Soul and Next IT Run.
“We're supporting those who didn't get the recognition they deserved crossing the finish line,” Lillard said. “As runners, we're all a family.”
The shoes will later be donated to Crosswalk Teen Shelter, Hope House and other organizations serving homeless individuals and youth in need, a news release from the Flying Irish running club reported.
The public is encouraged to show their support by dropping off shoes at the sculpture, where shoes will be collected daily until Friday, or by bringing shoes to the Flying Irish Running Club on Thursday, at 6 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel on the River.
Shoes can also be dropped off at Runners Soul at 221 N. Wall Street until Friday.
