Those concerned for youth in local schools and area neighborhoods who may be thinking of experimenting with alcohol or drugs  are invited to a Youth Drug Prevention Event in January.

The East Valley Community Coalition is a project sponsored by the Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative at the Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery (a division of Department of Social and Health Services).  These organizations are specifically focused on the issue of keeping dangerous and addictive substances out of the hands of youth, according to a press release. In partnership with the Spokane County Community Services, Housing, and Community Development Department, this coalition has reviewed data specific to the risk factors for youth living in the East Valley School District area and developed a strategic plan that focuses on bringing prevention services and community awareness to residents of East Valley.

The coalition will sponsor an event on Jan. 14, 2015, at CenterPlace Regional Event Center, 2426 N Discovery Place, Spokane Valley.  The event starts at 7 p.m. and will include an overview of the signs and symptoms of substance use, the goals and plans of the East Valley Community Coalition, and a sampling of the projects and services that will be offered in the community. According to a press release, coalition members will discuss their involvement in the community and the programs they can offer to provide information and skills training for parents and youth — all focused on protecting youth from early initiation of substance use.
