People ask me how I think so well of others
how I can treat them with such
compassion and gentleness
giving them the benefit of the doubt,
and seeing their positive qualities.
I tell them that this is not
a Polly Anna, naïve approach
that ignores the faults and failings,
the weaknesses and wrongdoings
It does not ignore the scars and battle wounds
that have taken their course upon the person’s life
But I tell them the reason I can look
with eyes of love,
the reason I can see goodness
where hate, revenge, and anger abound
where pain and suffering abide.
I tell them it is because everyone I’ve ever met
has turned out,
to be human.
