I have mixed feelings about law enforcement officers. When I’m driving in my car, listening to Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” and get rudely interrupted by a blue flashing light just because I have lost track of the speedometer reading, I get perturbed. Really, don’t these guys have better things to do than interrupt one of the greatest rock riffs of all time? However, when our house was broken into by some cretin looking for quick money to support a drug habit, I will admit to a significant level of gratitude at the presence and professionalism of our blue clad public servants.

And how does any of this fall into a faith and values discussion? While we spend a lot of time discussing faith (don’t get me started on faith), maybe this is a good time to talk about values. As members of society we have a responsibility to practice and monitor certain values. And without an adequate means of monitoring these values, life could degenerate into chaos. This monitoring is an important function for society. Therefore, it is also important to get to know and show appreciation to those professionals who represent all of us as law enforcement public servants.

Jan. 9 is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. It will be celebrated at our Public Safety building at 1100 W Mallon Ave. from 6 to 9 p.m. Lets meet there, show our appreciation and maybe take a more active role in an area that provides us so such mutual benefit.
