Is believing in love crazy? Especially with so many problems we need to solve? The answer may surprise you.
I am sad by the departure of the Rev. Samuel Wells from Duke. It is strange to say this as I have never met the man and he is leaving America for a position as the lead pastor at St Martin in the Fields in London, which is a promotion for him. His departure fills me with a bittersweet melancholy.
His sermons helped my family through the worst of our son’s medical condition. His clear understanding about what the Gospel means, God with us, and his deep faith made me understood my own faith better. I understood that Jesus was with us when my son Tito had his seven-hour brain surgery. I came back many times to his sermons found on YouTube. I do believe the American church would be better by heeding his words.
When I heard about his departure, I went to see his if sermons for St Martin in the Fields would be available online. I found I I can read them, but I am still uncertain if I can hear them, the dilemma of living with the Internet. Above is his his sermon to the outgoing Duke students, his second to last sermon at Duke. It starts around the 27-minute mark and he answers the question I posed. Listen to it and tell me if you think he is right.
