The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane Stake will be the final stop for Faith Feast: An Interfaith Progressive Dinner on March 30.

The dinner, a fundraiser for Spokane Faith & Values, will begin with appetizers at the The Spokane Buddhist Temple, then guests will travel to Temple Beth Shalom for an entree then have dessert at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spokane Stake.

About the stake

The first LDS missionaries arrived in Spokane on Aug. 31, 1895, though the first LDS Sunday School wasn’t established until 1906, 11 years later. By 1947, there were enough baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (2,520 to be exact) to officially organize the Spokane Stake. Its original borders stretched from the Canadian border to the Columbia River, and from the Idaho/Montana border west almost to Moses Lake. The present stake center was dedicated in 1988 and serves approximately 5,000 Latter-day Saints in ten congregations, meeting in four buildings across the South Hill and part of northeast Spokane. Today, there are four additional stakes and an estimated 20,000 members of the Church in the greater Spokane area.

About the food

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints observe a health code called “The Word of Wisdom” canonized as Doctrine & Covenants section 89. The Word of Wisdom specifically includes prohibitions Mormons are well-known for: no smoking or chewing tobacco, and no drinking alcohol, coffee or tea. Less well-known is that it also includes counsel to eat healthfully, moderately and “with prudence and thanksgiving.”
