If you’re Jewish, keep kosher, and like meat, Chabad of Spokane County can hook you up. Their order form includes items you can request any old time, like various portions and permutations of a chicken, as well as special items (like lamb chops) that Chabad orders only twice a year (before the High Holidays and before Passover). Kosher food in Spokane reaches its festive apotheosis at Temple Beth Shalom’s Kosher Dinner, which happens this year on Sunday, March 8. Brisket, knishes, tzimmes and other goodies from the kvelling heart of Jewish cuisine make an annual appearance at this large-scale event, which also includes entertainment and nearly endless schmoozing. The big KD tends to attract out-of-towners as well as locals who may never before have eaten Jewish food. That makes it a great interfaith learning opportunity for Jews and non-Jews alike.
Besides that? Well, KosherNear.Me paints a pretty bleak portrait: Seattle and Vancouver are the closest cities with legit kosher restaurants. But hey: Seattle isn’t too far to drive for tasty kosher eats. If you’re on the west side and have a craving for food that’s rabbi approved, check out Bamboo Garden — that place is friggin’ awesome. I can vouch for it.
And a big shout out to Trader Joes, which carries kosher beef, turkey burgers, and chicken.
Yeah, I neglected the grocery side of things. Of course Spokane groceries carry more or less kosher stuff, depending on how anti-Semitic they are. (Just kidding.) Trader Joe’s clearly has some love for the people of the book.
