So how is it that in a town with 256 bible-preaching, God-fearing Christian churches, how do we have such an epidemic of homelessness?

I was greeted the other morning by my 6-year-old brightly announcing, “Good morning, Maman. I love helping the homeless. When can we do that again?”

I first found myself homeless and close to crazy in the Florida Keys seven years earlier. I was pretty sure, at that point, I was going to hell and was being punished for things had transpired in my childhood.

The main activity for celebrating Martinmas is a lantern walk. We meet in Cannon Hill Park, the children bearing the lanterns they made in class, and everyone sings a simple song as we walk around the pond.

While studying social work at a faith-based university, I am continually smacked in the face with this question: How do I respond morally, ethically, personally and professionally to poverty in my community?
