It has long troubled me that the word "good" has two antonyms: "bad" and "evil." Like there isn't a more potent level of "good" to be the opposite of "evil," to stand against evil. All "good" has going for itself against evil is small, comparatively — yet somehow, not inadequate.

There's evil in the world because we're always unsatisfied.

Because people are hurt by experiences

Because people are not satisfied with being human

I have been interested in the conversations in our nation since the massacre of the children in Newton, Conn.

It is clear that the event has pushed some beyond the standard language of the past.

There are few moments that are truly capable of resizing a person. Death is the main force that cuts people down to size. It is inevitable, and the only guarantee in life. As many have pointed out before, we often live as though death is a myth.

During a recent debate, Richard Mourdock, the Republican Senate candidate from Indiana, explained his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape as follows:

“I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is a gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
