New confessional a hit with sinners

The Rev. Janusz Kukulka can't say his parishioners are sinning more but they sure are lining up at the new confessional booth.

For years, Kukulka, the pastor of St. Mary the Immaculate Conception in Derby, was content with absolving sins in a private room marked by an exit sign to the right of the altar.

Temple Spring Food Festival feeds many

Sounds of chatter filled the air as people of all ages poured into the basement of the Spokane Buddhist Temple for its annual “Haru Matsuri” Spring Food Festival on April 21.

The temple served a variety of dishes, including a teriyaki chicken dinner that included rice, Tsukemono and Miso soup.

It’s a warm spring evening in Browne’s Addition, and Coeur d’Alene Park is filled with people walking dogs and playing Frisbee. A few of them wander into All Saints Lutheran Church across the street, where doors are propped open in preparation for Tuesday night’s weekly meal hosted by the Rev. Alan Eschenbacher and a group of dedicated local volunteers.

Temple to celebrate Japan Week with annual food festival

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, located on 927 South Perry St., is holding its annual “Haru Matsuri” Japan Spring Food Festival fundraiser, in conjunction with Spokane’s Japan Week, April 21 from noon to 4 p.m.
According to a press release, 30 volunteers prepare and serve the Teriyaki Chicken in the span of four days.

For the love of fire

Tomorrow night, Christians all around the globe will gather by fire. It is the night of the Pascha, the Easter Vigil. Modeled in part on the Jewish Passover, the vigil begins at sundown (approximately) and continues for a long time. The first action of the vigil is to bless the new fire, a reminder that God is the source of all warmth and light.
