Of course evolution should be taught in schools. Evolution is a solid scientific theory based in the methods of science. Evolution is not about belief or faith. It is about what has been observed and tested. In science, theories are considered our best understanding at a particular point in time. All theories are provisional, which means if further observation and testing were to show otherwise, then the theory must be revised. Those who would dismiss evolution as “only a theory” are using the word theory in a colloquial manner and not in a scientific manner. When what they mean to say is that evolution should be dismissed because it is just a guess.
Those who would oppose evolution being taught in schools normally do so because they believe in creationism. Yet such individuals would not give up all of the advances made by science such as , TVs, automobiles, planes, computers, cell phones and so forth. They do not dismiss the theory of electricity, various theories of physics and thermal dynamics, which have all contributed to the invention and creation of all of these items. Nor do they dismiss the gains in medical theory, which has given us tremendous new technologies in medicine as well as pharmaceuticals to combat various diseases.
To selectively say, oh evolution is just a guess and therefore should not be taught in our schools is simple rubbish. Evolution is our best understanding at this time of how life has developed on this planet. Why would we not teach that in schools?
Science is open to revision of its understanding of how things work as new information, observation, testing, and verification takes place. Few religions take such an approach.
