New Community Church did not intend to move; in fact, through the 25 years they’ve operated, their current location has been their longest home at around 11 years. However, they were approached by the Central United Methodist Church about its sale of their downtown building. After considering what would be best for the church as well as for the local community, New Community is now in the process of purchasing the location at 518 West 3rd Ave.

The Central United Methodist Church building may soon be the new home for New Community Church/Amber Woods – SpokaneFAVS

The building, which has been empty, save for Shalom Ministries since September, is historic in more ways than one. Built in 1905, The church still houses its original pipe organ as well as original stained glass. Also, it was within this building in 1909 that Father’s Day was founded by Sonora Louise Smart Dodd.

The move to the new location will not only help New Community Church better house their own congregation, but will also provide space for the various community and church groups with which they cooperate. New Community is dedicated to providing services to the local community and partners with multiple local non-profits including Shalom Ministries, First Things First, Young Life, 90-plus soccer program, as well as sharing space with the Kaleo Church. New Community hopes that by acquiring a larger, more centrally located space from which to operate, they and the groups they partner with will be able to have a greater impact by reaching a larger portion of Spokane.

While New Community hopes to have the purchasing side of the move finalized by the end of the month, they predict it will be a month or two before they begin holding services at the new location. Purchasing the property is only the first step, however, as the building will need minor repairs and landscaping, not to mention the physical act of moving in.

Donations of money, time, and skills are greatly appreciated regardless of amount. As pastor Russ Davis said, anyone wishing to help can “contribute in a way they’ve been blessed.” Anyone wishing to donate can contact New Community Church at (509)-483-6500.
