Ask A Mormon: Can you be baptized after death?

Mormons believe that “God is no respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34). He loves all of his children, regardless of when or where they were born. We also believe that baptism, and the covenants we make at baptism, are stepping stones on the path to salvation and exaltation.

Whenever I wonder if there is a sense of humor in the world I look at all the beauty we find and are inspired by in the natural world, and then how hard we work to change it. Think of the lowly dandelions in our yard, those beautiful puff balls of seeds that float so beautifully on a summer breeze.

Consider for a moment the platypus, the kangaroo and the fact we wring our hands at the number of species that are known and becoming rare. Few of us realize that more new species have been identified in the last 100 years than in the history of human existence; are they new species or just ones we never saw before?

I don’t believe in a single Creator but in a Creative Power from which all creation emanates. This power is ever expansive. If we are going to keep our sanity there is a definite need for a sense of humor alongside a sense of wonder. I have to be able to laugh at myself when I’m so tangled in the tiny details of living that I totally miss the whole reason for life. I need to be able to laugh at myself, and with others, as we untangle from the web of everyday life so we may have time to enjoy the grandeur of creation.

If you ever wonder about the need for humor in life picture a 8 lb. baby covering a 250 lb. football player with pee because he just wasn’t quite quick enough with the diaper.

Joe Niemiec
The Rev. Joe Niemiec Jr. began his spiritual quest in 1986 when he walked out of a Houston jail and was struck by the realization that his life was in shambles. He began his quest for ‘getting back on track’ with 12 step programs, followed by learning and practicing meditation with a local Redding, California, teacher.
