From the Buddha’s point of view, genuine love — a wish for the happiness of another — is powerful medicine. Sravasti Abbey, the Buddhist monastery near Newport, will host a weekend meditation retreat, The Power of Love, April 26 to 28, to teach the steps to developing a more loving heart. Beginners are welcomed for this residential retreat which will include teachings, meditation instruction and practice, and keeping noble silence.
Author, teacher, and Abbey founder Venerable Thubten Chodron will lead the retreat, and offer the Buddha’s view on the difference between the love that heals and the clinging attachments that harm us, according to a news release. “
Through meditation, we can train in awakening positive emotions like loving kindness that overcome our dissatisfaction and heal old hurts, resentments, and loneliness,” the release reads.
The retreat begins at 5 p.m. April 26 and ends after lunch on April 28. Meals are all vegetarian, and accommodations are in shared rooms. All programs at Sravasti Abbey are offered on a donation basis, and a $100 offering is requested to reserve a place. Pre-registration is required.
