According to Why Marriage Matters Washington, gay couples of color are nearly twice as likely to raise children than white gay couples. The organization reports that nearly 47percent of African-American lesbian couples and 42 percent of Latina lesbian couples are raising children.

On Saturday from 11 a.m .to 1 p.m. at East Central Community Center a panel will discuss these issues and other same-sex marriage issues at, “Why Marriage Matters: Conversations with Communities of Color about the Freedom to Marry for All Loving Couples.”

According to a press release from the Peace and Action Justice League of Spokane the event is designed to lift up the visibility of LGBT people of color and leaders of communities of color who are allies for the freedom to marry.

Panelists will include Sandy Williams, Stanley Ruiz, Marvo Reguindin, and Ramon Alvarez, from Spokane's LGBT community, and the Rev. Happy Watkins who will talk about his support for freedom to marry for all couples.
