Bruce Meyer

Bruce Meyer writes about the relationship between the physical universe and the pursuit of spirituality.

Science’s super dilemma

We shouldn’t be here. According to astrophysics, our Milky Way galaxy doesn’t contain enough stuff to ever have formed. But here we are, so that causes sort of a dilemma for scientists. To fix this problem, they’ve hypothesized a substance called dark matter.

Mastering the art of political projection

Sigmund Freud was the first to describe the mentality of casting my failures onto somebody else. The crushing thought that I ruined my marriage is too much for me to face, so I blame my ex-spouse. Although exes have long been targets for this kind of treatment, public figures are even better. The further removed from my immediate relations, the safer they become.

Muse offers Christian gangsta rap jazz odyssey, and then some

Muse describes their music as "Christian gangsta rap jazz odyssey with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face-melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia." That about covers it. But most critics see them as alternative rock, often on the side of harder metal. "The 2nd Law" is their sixth album and the title refers to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, also known as entropy, or the state of disorder, which is probably why it appeals to hard rockers.

Mourdock and abortion as objective evil

During a recent debate, Richard Mourdock, the Republican Senate candidate from Indiana, explained his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape as follows:

“I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is a gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

Earth’s fiery travail

Both Genesis and the Enuma Elish describe the earth as being formed from out of  chaos and into order. The giant impact hypothesis of 1975 states that the moon is a byproduct of a massive impact of the earth and another giant body called Theia. It’s a crazy idea, but there’s actually some supporting evidence.

Battle for Planet Earth

As an aspiring science fiction writer, I couldn’t resist checking out this seminar titled “Battle for Planet Earth.”  It was held at the local Post Falls Adventist Church over the weekend.

The 7 days of Genesis

Most theologians today consider the first chapter of Genesis to be a response to the Babylonian creation epic called the Enuma Elish. Both accounts are concerned with the conquest of order over chaos. The Enuma Elish begins with “When on high,” and Genesis begins similarly, although with a unique Hebrew spin, with “In the beginning.”
