How would you describe the difference between New Thought, Swedenborg and Christian Science — particularly in how the mind develops a closeness with God that manifests in health (physical, mental and spiritual)?
I won’t speak for all New Thought, but as a religious scientist, I see both Swedenborg and Mary Baker Eddy as believing themselves to be divinely inspired and having the true Christian belief. Most Religious Science ministers would not consider themselves Christians and we certainly know we do not have a corner on the theology.
We do believe in the healing of the body through affirmative prayer (treatment) according to our personal alignment with Spirit or God. We believe in true unity in which — at the absolute spiritual level — there is only oneness with all creation which is the manifestation of God. We do not believe in duality and, therefore, need not pray through or to someone — our practice is to bring ourselves into alignment with spiritual truths that are universal.
