What is the Islamic view on interfaith marriage?

One of the beautiful principles of Islam is being able to live harmoniously with other faiths that are contrary to the Islamic beliefs. For example, in the Holy Quran, Allah teaches in Chapter 108 Al-Kafiroon, verse 6, “To your religion and to me mine.”  With those few words, it’s clear that Muslims and Non-Muslims can and have orchestrated treaties beside each other for hundreds of years, contributing to a greater cause. Between the two parties can the same disposition translate under the umbrella of holy matrimony?

The answer is YES! Islam subscribes to the relationship of a Muslim Man and Non-Muslim Woman (Jews and Christians) in marriage. In the Holy Quran, Allah teaches in Chapter 5 Al-Ma’idah, verse 5 “And permitted to you are chaste women, be they either from the believers or from among those who have received the Book (Jews and Christians) before you.” Throughout Islamic history, there’s been a few occasions where prominent Muslim men exercised their right to marry someone of the book.

Interfaith marriages will exhibit signs of success if both partners commit to working hard towards showing an abundance of respect, love and channeling in on shared values. Islam teaches and strongly encourages every Muslim to purify their intentions before making a commitment. The journey with interfaith marriages can sometimes be difficult, mutual growth and trust can surpass any challenge.
