St. John's Cathedral
St. John’s Cathedral

On Dec. 15 at 4 p.m., the Cathedral Choirs of St. John the Evangelist will celebrate the annual service of Lessons & Carols.

Begun in 1880 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward White Benson, the traditional Nine Lessons & Carols brings together the ancient readings and songs of the Christmas Season, according to a press release.

The Junior Choir will open the program from the balcony under the Rose Window, singing “Once in Royal David’s City.” During the program of readings from Scripture and carol singing by the audience, the Cathedral Choir will sing Hans Leo Hassler’s elegant chorale “Dixit Maria,” Mary’s response to the angel’s announcement that she would bear the Christ Child, and other pieces.

St. John’s Chancel Bells will bring the service to a festive finish.

For more information, check the Cathedral website or 838-4277.
