Over the centuries, the kitchen has seen many important transformations in terms of placement, size, shape, style, and function. From the basic centrally-located open-air spaces that served all community members in ancient times to the tucked-away areas detached from the main living quarters and buzzing with activity in the early 1900s to the highly technologized spaces of today, featuring all sorts of cutting-edge appliances that allow for more efficient cooking, the evolution of the kitchen is truly remarkable and reflects the very evolution of human society.

Though much has changed, the one thing that has stayed the same all throughout history is the kitchen’s role as the spiritual hub of the home. Even in our modern times, when we have become increasingly disconnected from spirituality and have somewhat lost the ability to appreciate life’s little miracles and joys, the kitchen remains the beating heart of the home and preserves an aura of sacredness.

Some of us might struggle to notice the profound power that kitchens hold and feel their healing energy in between the piles of unwashed dishes, smart appliances, and messy countertops. But we can assure you that all kitchens, no matter what size or form they come in, have something magical about them. You might just need a bit of help to bring that magic to light.

Why the kitchen is more than just a simple room

You might be wondering why, out of all the rooms, the kitchen has received the title of the heart of the home. Why don’t we say the same thing about the living room or the bedroom? Well, there are various reasons for this complimenting designation.

First of all, the kitchen is, as we all know it, a practical space that people use to cook meals and store ingredients. Since food represents a source of nourishment that also brings us joy and comfort, the very act of preparing and serving food becomes an act of love, a manifestation of intentions, and an opportunity for connection. That’s why, for many people, this room conjures up cherished childhood memories, most of them related to the holidays when the whole house was invaded by the smell of delicious festive dishes coming from the kitchen.

The kitchen’s central role in our lives also comes from the fact that they are usually a hive of activity where a lot of things happen other than cooking and eating. This is a communal space that all family members gravitate toward for one reason or another. The simple daily rituals that take place here, like sipping a cup of coffee or preparing a quick sandwich, get the conversation going, turning the kitchen into an impromptu meeting and socialising point. Speaking of which, those who have enough square footage often use their kitchens as party venues to host get-togethers and celebrations.

At the same time, the kitchen provides an informal setting that exudes a certain level of intimacy. It’s a room reserved for family members or close friends where strangers don’t usually have access, which provides a sense of comfort and protection.

Creating a space that feeds the body and the soul

If your kitchen doesn’t exactly feel like the cosy sanctuary we’ve just described, there are ways to fix it. Choosing the right kitchen units and appliances and creating a visually appealing style is just half of it – the rest comes from other actions and aspects that have less to do with the material world.

Keep it decluttered and organised

Physical clutter leads to mental clutter, so if you want to turn your kitchen into a sacred retreat, start by getting rid of all the unnecessary items that clutter your cupboards and your countertops and make sure every nook and corner is perfectly clean, tidy, and organised.

Turn meal preparation into a ritual

Cooking is not just about putting a bunch of ingredients together and turning them into something edible. It’s also a form of self-expression and a contemplative process, and you should treat it as such. The repetitive tasks you engage in, like peeling and stirring, are an invitation to mediation, so once you become aware of it, you’ll change your perspective on cooking.

Make family meals a priority

When you make it your purpose to bring the whole family together at the table, meal time becomes bonding time, giving you the opportunity to create wonderful memories together and strengthening the connection between you and your loved ones. Obviously, you can involve your family members and even guests in the cooking and cleaning process and turn these into fun and relaxing activities.

Don’t rush

Most people are way too busy to stop and enjoy what they’re doing or what’s going on around them. As a result, cooking ends up being a mindless and rushed experience that we don’t fully appreciate. Try to switch your approach by being more present and mindful while you’re in the kitchen. While this might not be possible on a daily basis, you can at least schedule a couple of days a week where you take your time to prepare a proper meal

Bring out your best dishes

Your finest tableware shouldn’t stay hidden in a cupboard and only see the light of day when you have guests over. Make sure to bring out your best pieces every now and then and treat yourself to a special dining experience.

Eat mindfully

Just as with cooking, eating should be a mindful act. So, next time you grab a quick bite or sit at the dining table, let go of intrusive thoughts and focus on the food that’s in front of you, enjoying every morsel and flavour.

Eliminate distractions

If you truly want your kitchen to feel like a sacred space, you have to show due respect and leave distractions at the door. This means turning off your TV and putting your smart devices aside while you’re in the kitchen.

All these simple practices and habits can enhance the overall appeal of your kitchen and make it live up to its reputation as the practical and spiritual hub of the home.
