If Halloween falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday we will celebrate it with tailgate “trick or treating” in our parking lot following our Sunday Service. “All Hallows Eve” is certainly not a New Thought or Religious Science holiday. Halloween is so ingrained within American society that we recognize it as a fun celebration.
Those in the New Thought tradition tend to be very independent; the individual ministers or centers will pick and choose what holidays (whether religious or secular) we choose to honor and that may change from year to year. We do honor the 64 Days of Non-violence each year and the 11 Days of Peace.
I find it interesting that “holidays” are days, often picked at random, that become sacred. As a society widens its doors to other cultures the original meaning will often get so watered down it does not even resemble the days of yore. New holidays are created and fall by the wayside (or lose their sanctity) and even newer ones are created. The human psyche seems to have a need to sanctify and celebrate events within its culture, getting upset when a holiday becomes commercialized, losing its sacredness…and yet that is the way of western culture
