Dear Trump: I challenge your use of Easter and Jesus for political gain

Guest Column by Mike Aleman

An Open Letter to Donald Trump

Dear Sir,

Regarding your comments and actions on Easter Day, and your mockery of the office of pope, you don’t bring religion back by holding an Easter egg hunt. Religion hasn’t left America. Religion in America, though changing, hasn’t gone anywhere. You have left religion, which isn’t the same thing. So by referencing religion and Jesus, you illustrate complete ignorance and hypocrisy of religion, especially Christianity.

You don’t honor Jesus by avenging your perceived enemies, by trashing former President Joe Biden on Easter Day. You don’t honor Jesus by vengeful policies that do harm to citizens, immigrants — legal or illegal — and students with approved visas. You don’t send letters of deportation to naturally-born Americans. You don’t honor Jesus with draconian tactics of picking people up off the streets or from their apartments and whisking them away without due process of law. That’s Nazism at its worst. You don’t honor the Roman Catholic Church by sending out a photo of you in the pope’s clerical garments. Your ignorance continues to show no bounds sir.

Romans 12:19 from the Holy Bible reads, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written, ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay.’”

For your edification, God says those words because he is the only one who has the wisdom to make such judgments. No single president or other human leader has the wisdom and the vision to issue vengeance. That’s why laws and courts were instituted, and without which we would all be endangered. If you truly are interested in the people of this country, in helping them achieve the happiness guaranteed by the Constitution, which you have sworn to uphold and defend, falsely as evidence shows, you will seek and study religions, especially Christianity, since you reference honoring Jesus.

Jesus says in Mark 12:31, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.”

I’m sure the following will only elicit scorn and laughter, but it would be wise for you to join a Bible study and attend once a week. Take the word to heart. Practice what Jesus says, such as, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Your neighbor being of course, anyone who needs your help and consideration.

You use the word “greatest” easily and often, and it is clear you want to be the greatest president ever, but you are already failing and will never reach your goal if you continue to put yourself, your needs and desires above being a true servant leader, like Jesus, for all the people of this country, not for just those you prefer or favor or those who laud you.

Regarding Jesus, he sacrificed himself for all others. That’s what Easter is really about. A 30,000 egg roll on the White House lawn — the eggs costing in the neighborhood of $5,000 — has nothing to do with bringing religion back to America. It has nothing to do with honoring Jesus. You honor Jesus by the words that come out of your mouth, and by the actions you take on behalf of others.

Sincerely,

M. P. Aleman
