Evil exists in the world. Evil was perpetrated in Florida in a heinous and senseless act. This isn’t a political or policy debate. This isn’t a left-right thing. This is a battle for the literal souls of humanity. Regardless of method, those with evil intent in their hearts will find a way to perpetrate evil. We can create laws and regulations, but as much as we want to, we can’t legislate someone’s heart or mind. People have the freedom to choose to deliberately step out of the light and into the darkness. It doesn’t take the news of the day to realize that darkness and evil are spreading and festering in humanity at an exponential pace. As a father, I’m always concerned for the welfare and safety of my family. Satan is throwing everything he has at us, trying to break through every defense we try to erect. And if we are being honest it sometimes feels like we can’t keep up with his attacks.
But I for one am not willing to give in or give up. I think we can all find times to step back and take an introspective look at how we can fortify our families so that we can be beacons of light, refuges in the storms, and the lower lights guiding lost ships to our safe harbors.
In the coming weeks and months, there will be many who prescribe solutions to the problems that are plaguing our country. Some I agree with, some I don’t. We all know there are huge societal issues to be addressed, and rational and sober debate that needs to occur. However, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of fixing those issues.
So let’s take a moment and focus on what we can control, mainly our own lives. Individually we may not be able to fix the world’s problems, but we can make sure our own houses are in order. The family, the very backbone of society, our largest sphere of influence, is where some of our greatest work can be done. Here are some ideas for strengthening your family and yourself.
- Have dinner together at the table. NO TV. NO ELECTRONICS. Just good food and great conversation.
- Worship and pray together. Build your home on a foundation of faith.
- Do service together. Nothing builds bonds like working to accomplish something together, especially when you are in the service of other people.
- Listen to your children. I mean really listen. Show that you are invested in their lives and their interests. Look them in the eyes when they are talking to you.
- Put down your phone pick up a book. Read to your children, especially from the Scriptures.
- Get away from technology and out into the wilderness. Show them the beauties of the Earth.
- Teach them compassion, mercy and forgiveness by your own example.
- Make your home a safe place where every family member feels love and a sense of belonging.
- Build family traditions. Take family vacations. Be stuck in a car for long periods of time together. It may seem like torture, but it’s guaranteed to build long-lasting memories.
As I said above, individually I probably won’t stop evil from happening. But together, if we each take charge of our own small sphere of influence, turn our hearts toward God, and reflect the light of Jesus Christ, we can overcome the darkness.
