Having a “personal God” feels kind of like making God into an app or a step tracker or a brand. Like, “oh hey, my personal brand is doing really well.” Nope. Doesn’t fly to me.
I’ll go with classic C.S. Lewis: “Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
It’s not that God doesn’t care about people’s personal and very different wants/needs/circumstances. I believe he does (The number of hairs on our head, that sort of thing). I think the phrase “personal God” just conveys a sense of ownership that doesn’t belong to me. So I believe God is very personal, just not “my personal” God.
