Ask a Catholic: How can I become Catholic and grow closer to God?

The Catholic Church welcomes all, columnist Mitch Finley said. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults helps those baptized or not enter fully into church life.

By Mitch Finley | FāVS News Columnist

Question: I want to become a Catholic so I can take the sacraments and confess all I have done. I have good faith in the Lord, I have always believed, but I haven’t done anything about it. I feel this is the time, and I want to go to heaven.

Any time is a good time to move closer to God. You don’t mention whether you have been baptized or not. Rest assured, however, that the Catholic Church warmly welcomes anyone who has been baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

We also welcome anyone who has not been baptized into any particular Christian tradition. Whether baptized or not, virtually all Catholic parish communities offer a program called the “Order of Christian Initiation of Adults” (OCIA), and any adult, baptized or not, is welcome to participate in this program, which leads to full participation in the life of the church.

If you’re in the Spokane area, visit the Diocese of Spokane for more information about OCIA classes. Or you can reach out to a diocese or Catholic Church near your for more information.
