An interfaith panel slated for June 5 will explore why the death penalty should be repealed in Washington.

“Honoring Life: A Compassionate Discussion on the Death Penalty” will include five speakers from different faiths, who will discuss why they believe capital punishment is unacceptable for a compassionate, civilized people, according to event organizer Victoria Thorpe.

She noted, however, that some of the panelists' faiths dictate a proper situation where the exceptional execution may be proper, even called for.

Panelists will be Venerable Thubten Chodron of Sravasti Abbey, the Rev. Todd Ekloff of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, Dean Bill Ellis of The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Sister Mary Ann Farley of Sisters of the Holy Names and Rabbi Michael Goldstein of Temple Beth Shalom.

The forum will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E 12th Ave. A time for questions and answers will be included and light refreshments will be served.
