NEWPORT — As the bhikshunis, guests and residents at Sravasti Abbey finish their warm, vegetarian lunch, a bell rings and together they begin chanting the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas.

On Saturday, Bhikkuni Day, Ven. Thubten Chodron of Sravasti Abbey, spoke the unversal call to better the world.

Ven. Thubten Chodron, a woman who has been central in in re-establishing the Bhikkhuni lineage, particularly in the West, said she was filled with spiritual questions growing up.

“Why am I here? What’s my purpose?” she wondered.

Venerable Thubten Chodron, abbess and founder of Sravasti Abbey, will give a talk on "Selflessness" at Sharing the Dharma Day, Aug. 5, at the abbey.

The program begins at 9:45 and newcomers are welcomed, according to a press release.
