What are people thinking when they spew hate? Are they all true believers? What’s more, how does someone get that way?

Many groups in Spokane, eastern Washington and northern Idaho perpetuate religious hatemongering. In Chattaroy, about 30 minutes away from Spokane, the anti-Muslim group Truth-In-Love Project is active. The anti-Muslim ACT for America is vocal in Spokane Valley and the anti-Muslim Pig Blood Bullets settles in Priest River, Idaho, an hour and a half away from Spokane.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the number of active hate groups across the Northwest dropped in 2013.

WASHINGTON (RNS) In response to five “We the People” petitions, the White House condemned the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church but said it is powerless to list the Kansas church as a hate group and remove its tax-exempt status.

The White House response on Tuesday (July 1) said the federal government does not maintain a list of hate groups, instead leaving that task to private organizations, such as the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center.
