I have two favorite holiday traditions the first one is the hanging of lights, which if you recall from my Christmas article last year, is a shared Buddhist and western tradition.
My husband, Chris, and I decided to have a “real” Christmas tree this year. By “real,” I mean, “fake,” but also I mean, “more real than the three-foot, self-lit, $10 one Chris bought years ago, before we met.” A “nicer fake” tree, if you will.
Chris started the decorating — stringing up LED lights all over the inside of the house. I pulled out the Christmas tree from the garage.
When my children were in elementary school, I was blessed to have a dear friend whose children were just a stage or two older. She was enormously helpful in preparing me for the next round of ‘opportunities’ (i.e. challenges) that would arise in parenting.
Looking back on my formative years, I have noticed that influential people in my life tended to present things as very black and white, and as an adult I now realize that things aren't that simple.
