The Evolutionary Psychology of Cosmides & Tooby/Suite101
The Evolutionary Psychology of Cosmides & Tooby/Suite101

Yesterday we reported on a new survey suggesting that views on human evolution are driven by Americans’ religious affiliation more than their level of education.

The study, by Pew Research Center, shows that six in 10 Americans say that humans have evolved over time, while one-third reject the idea of human evolution. It also shows about one in four American adults say that “a supreme being guided the evolution of living things for the purpose of creating humans and other life in the form it exists today.”

Where do you stand on this issue? Do you believe in human evolution?

Probably not a shocker that I am in the Yes category. Those in the Undecided or No category, feel free to lob evolution questions to me via my Ask an Atheist button.

I have been studying this topic for way long, and while it is true that antievolutionists in America tend to be politically conservative religious believers, it is more complex than a simple matter of theology. Deeper is the question of what cognitive systems and temperament incline people towards the Kulturkampf framework. If someone has few of the cognitive traits that dispose them to accepting that framework, while they may be raised in it, they are likely to fall away when they get out into the bigger world. Conversely, people with those predispositions will gravitate towards the framework without necessarily recquiring much nudging.
