On Tuesday blogger Eric Blauer wrote, “Are you a Bible-believing babbler?” in which he asked readers if they believed in the devil.

He referenced a recent poll where 57 percent of participants said they believed in the existence of the devil. The poll also revealed that 51 percent of participants said they believed someone could be possessed by the devil or an evil spirit and 46 percent believe in the power of exorcism.

Though Martin Luther threw his ink blotter and farted at the devil, I have to say I don’t believe in a personified, condensed evil being like that. I affirm that Satan, or The Accuser shows up in scripture. And I have wished I could fight against concrete evil like that. But a more abiding truth, one reflected in Lutheran theology, is that evil and sin and brokenness reside in all of us.
