Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ came first, then the city of Spokane.

Built in 1890, the church watched the city grow up around it — a high school, a freeway, other churches.

In the video above, the Rev. Andrea “Andy” CastroLang explains Westminster's beginnings, how the structure has evolved and why the congregation continues to put money into maintaining the historic building.

This series is part of the Historic Church Project, which includes a directory containing photos and information about Spokane's oldest churches.

View Westminster's listing here and read more about this project here.

Fast Facts:

  • Westminster was built in what's called Norman-style architecture
  • In the 1920s Westminster had more than 2,000 members
  • In 1978 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places
