Ask a Pagan: Can I call upon deities that I don’t personally worship or sacrifice to?

Hello and thank you for your bravery in reaching out with your question.

Everyone works with the deities a little differently, and the most important aspect is to follow your intuition and be respectful. Your intuition is your most powerful tool in guiding you toward your highest goals and ideals. Trust your instincts.

My personal belief is that when you make the effort to reach out to a new deity (such as petitioning Hypnos for aid with sleep or asking Athena for strength in overcoming challenges) you enhance your overall connection to the magical source.

Researching the new deity is an easy and respectful way to introduce yourself to a god or goddess you are thinking of working with. And remember, deities can be resources for us in much the same way that our grandparents and aunts and uncles are — sometimes you just want to ask someone other than your direct parent/patron.

Again, thank you for your question. Good luck on your journey, and Blessed Be!
