Nicholas Damascus

As an infant, I was baptized as an Eastern Orthodox Christian. However, I would say that becoming a Christian is a work in progress, and I often wonder would there be enough evidence to convict me of becoming a Christian. The Orthodox Church is the ancient Church that Christ and the Apostles established. It is not a religion but rather a way of life. It is not about rules and regulations but rather guide posts to make choices to transition to what we were designed to become. Becoming Orthodox is not a conversion but more so a transformation of self. It’s not about being right: it is about “right being.” In John 14:6, Christ says I am the Way (to love and serve one another), the Truth (there is only one reality), and the Life (that life source is love). I invite you to submit any topics or questions to “Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian” on the website. Join me in finding our way back home to the original teachings of the Church. When you change the way you look at things, things change the way they look.

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Do pallbearers wear hats?

To my knowledge unless supplanted by some obscure tradition with a small “t,” pallbearers don’t wear “hats.”

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Does your church build schools, etc?

The Eastern Orthodox Church founded institutions, hospitals, orphanages, libraries, welfare agencies, and made great contributions to monasticism.

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Is your church a schism?

So The Oriental Orthodox is a minor schism, right?

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Do you pray “Hail Mary?”

Mary, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, is first among saints.

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Did the Orthodox Church support killing heretics?

There were incidents of Roman emperors, Russian tzars and Byzantine emperors who have done things “in the name of the church” that were motivated by economic or political circumstances and the church spoke out against them, however not in every situation.

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: What are your thoughts on “Mary Did You Know?”

The song is very well done but seems to allude that Mary was unaware and uninformed in the event that she was participating in.

Ask An Eastern Orthodox Christian: Do you have to do confession?

Repentance is not just a feeling of mere remorse of being sorry for a wrong done.
