Matthew Kincanon is a communications coordinator with a journalism and political science degree from Gonzaga University. His journalism experience includes the Gonzaga Bulletin, The Spokesman-Review, Art Chowder, Trending Northwest, Religion Unplugged and FāVS News. The salmon: its spiritual importance and conservation crisis

With the salmon runs being depleted in the Columbia and Snake Rivers due to the dams, habitat loss, rising temperatures and other factors, Julian Matthews and Lucinda “Luci” Simpson, board members of Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment, described the spiritual importance of the salmon and why action must be taken to save them.

Local Artist Brings Native American Art to Eyewear

Teri Harris, general manager of Encore Vision, said the company began supplying eyewear for tribal members of the Colville Indian Health Service Unit in Nespelem, WA in 2008. Despite not being Native American herself, the frames she designed proved to be popular with the Colville Tribal members, which made her decide it would be better to enlist the help from a local Native artist to better their culture with true Native American designed artwork.

NAACP Conference to celebrate Spokane branch’s 100 years and encourage voting

The NAACP Alaska Oregon Washington State Area Conference will be held from Friday to Sunday, (Sept.13 - 15) at Northern Quest Resort and Casino, which will host guest speakers and hold workshops that will address current issues involving communities of color and taking action to vote.

GU to host conference to focus on indigenous, minority communities

The theme of the conference is “Bridges and Walls Across the Americas: Dialogues of Survivance, Endurance, and Resistance,” which will explore impacts and legacies of colonialism and decolonization, imperialism, state-formation, populism, neoliberalism, historical and contemporary contexts of resistances, and civic and social movements undertaken by indigenous and minority communities, among others.

World Relief Spokane hosts prayer event for refugees

World Relief Spokane hosted a prayer event Tuesday night at First Presbyterian Church of Spokane in response to the Trump Administration considering zeroing out the number of refugees resettled by 2020, encouraging people to pray with refugees and for refugees.

Salish School to host Rally for Salish Language

To celebrate the United Nations (UN) Year of Indigenous Languages, Salish School of Spokane will be leading the 2019 Rally for Salish on Friday, July 26 at noon in the Clocktower Meadow of Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane.
