Joe Niemiec

The Rev. Joe Niemiec Jr. began his spiritual quest in 1986 when he walked out of a Houston jail and was struck by the realization that his life was in shambles. He began his quest for ‘getting back on track’ with 12 step programs, followed by learning and practicing meditation with a local Redding, California, teacher.

Evolution or Revolution?

Evolution is the time between an idea being formulated and the outcome or manifestation to materialize. Revolution is when a seemingly foreign idea is realized and we do everything in our power to internalize and manifest it.

You can study other religions without becoming them

It is possible to have studied numerous different traditions, but the study of a tradition does not mean we have “become” that, even a little bit. Many people have a faith of choice and then add to their philosophical and spiritual armory the ideas they are attracted to within other traditions.

Judging others is immoral

The only truly immoral action I can take is to judge another person. Each of us is living on a continuum between birth and death on the physical plain and between ignorance and enlightenment on the spiritual plain.

Why interfaith?

When I traveled Southeast Asia in the early 70’s onboard a helicopter carrier I started out believing, in part, the propaganda about “them.” While there I found that the people I met had the same life desires as I had. We all wanted to raise our children and grandchildren in relative peace and with whatever comfort we may be able to earn.

I’m thankful that I live in this country

I have often had a challenge with gratitude lists or talking about what I am thankful for because it seems to come off as shallow.
What really touches my gratitude button is still being alive, and the opportunity to live in such a wonderful country.

One step at a time

We did a walking meditation the other evening in a class that my wife and I teach. In the meditation the meditators take one step in silence with each breath focusing on their surroundings — coolness, dampness and unevenness of the ground, the leaves, life in the moment.

Sometimes life is like that, we move forward, slowly, yet we are still moving forward.

Voting is a sacred duty

Tomorrow we have the opportunity to go to the polls and cast our ballot for our choice of who we would like to see lead the nation, state, county, and city governments over the next few years.

If you are reading this I take for granted you are walking a conscious moral path.
