Once a year, on the Saturday closest to the Autumnal Equinox, something really special happens in Spokane. The energy shifts. The air fills with the scent of cinnamon pinecones and crisp falling leaves. Summer relaxes its grip and the season slides gently into a time of chilly mornings and hearth fires. The wheel of the year turns, and it is time, once again, for Pagan Fest.
This coming Saturday, Sept. 19, magic will unfold at Spokane Community College. More than 100 vendors including artisans, authors and practitioners of divination will fill the courtyard and Lair Building. Local performers and presenters will entertain, inform, and delight.
A petting zoo and ferret rescue will bring the theme of “Fantastic Familiars” to life. And our guest of honor, Courtney Weber, will guide us into the unknown as she speaks on The Morrigan and Hekate.
Attendees will come from all over the Inland Empire. Some will bring camp chairs and coolers and spend the entire day, while others will join us for just a workshop or two.
Live music will fill the space, handmade trinkets will find new homes, and at noon, yours truly will lead a ritual asking Octopus, Owl, and Cat to lend us their wisdom and blessings as we begin our descent into the dark time of the year.
Pagan Fest started in 2022 as an experiment. Rachel Heatley, Kohana Richardson and I began to wonder if Spokane was ready for a loud and proud pagan event. We had hoped for somewhere between 300 and 400 attendees. We ended up with over a thousand.
What was supposed to be a relatively small event at the Universal Unitarian Church became a definitive cry for more. We had our answer. Yes, Spokane was more than ready.
