In the Bible God created the world in six days, found it good and very good, and rested on the seventh day, the Sabbath. Jesus would take private time in the wilderness. Gandhi would spend one day a week in silence. All of us need time to spend in solitude, within ourselves to rejuvenate and recharge our batteries.
The Sabbath is meant to connect with God in the quiet of your heart. This is why some traditions honor the Sabbath for 24 hours, time to perform religious duties, time for the family, and most of all time for you. When I am unable to take 24 hours I make sure I take time each day for spiritual practice, family and myself.
We all touch the divine in our own ways and what is important is that we pass on the experience of the divine and help others find their way to that experience. Often when I see parents or grandparents playing with little children there is a light in their eyes, a glow in their being and I know they are experiencing pure Spirit, ecstasy — God in form.
This is why family and friends are so important in our lives — balance.
Take time today, in your way to connect on the level of family, or friendship, self and God.
